Use these photo guides to find true mulberry in your area. Focus on the leaf shape first, then compare the whole tree. The two most useful species for South Coast Silks are Morus alba and Morus nigra.
Step 1: look at the leaf shape and texture. Step 2: compare the overall tree. Step 3: if you are still unsure, do not guess — use silkworm chow instead.
Usually the easiest and most common mulberry to find, and the one people most often feed to silkworms.
Also a true mulberry. It is less variable and usually easier to recognise by its darker, rougher leaves.
Don’t use your silkworms to test an unidentified plant. Only feed leaves that you can confidently identify as mulberry and that you know have not been sprayed with pesticides or other garden chemicals. If you’re unsure, use silkworm chow instead.

They are young hatchlings, typically 1–8 days old at the time of dispatch. Exact age varies slightly with each hatch.
They will be very small young hatchlings, with size varying across the 1–8-day dispatch window. Some photography on the site shows older silkworms so their features are easier to see, so the worms you receive may initially be much smaller.
No. The habitats are optional convenience add-ons. You can use your own suitable container as long as it is clean, dry, well ventilated and has enough usable floor space as the worms grow.
Fresh mulberry leaves are the natural food source. Only use leaves you can confidently identify as true mulberry and that you know have not been sprayed with pesticides or other garden chemicals. Silkworm chow is planned as an alternative when fresh leaves are unavailable.
Live silkworm orders are dispatched Monday–Wednesday using Australia Post Express Post and are lodged over the counter at a Post Office. Dispatch may be delayed when weather, public holidays or postal disruptions could increase the risk of the parcel being held in transit.
Contact South Coast Silks within 24 hours of delivery and keep the packaging. Please include clear photos of the silkworms and parcel so the issue can be assessed. Eligible claims under our live-arrival guarantee are resolved with a replacement. This voluntary guarantee does not limit any rights you may have under the Australian Consumer Law.
